Have you heard?
Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow!
That means only four more years of people losing their minds and alienating friends and family over the election!
Look, I get it. People are unhappy. We’re descending into fascism, or Christian Nationalism, or tyranny, etc. or whatever.
(As an aside, I’m a devout and conservative Christian. I’m a Southern gun-owner. Still, nobody has so far invited me to any meetings about taking over the country. It’s getting a little hurtful…)
Please, let’s remember how the the American political process works. That is, pretty much every four years about half of the country is furious and hopeless. Every four years, with increasing passion, one side accuses the other side of being Nazis or Communists.
It’s the lay of the land. It’s imperfect.
I know so many people who are devastated by the election. I love y’all!
I know so many people who feel like it’s Christmas morning and they got a new Mercedes in the driveway! (And their team won the the ACC.) I love y’all too!
But the country almost always drifts back to some sort of weird, paralyzed, dysfunctional center. Like all families.
The thing is, every time we have an election, the party that wins gets to do their thing. President Obama got to do his thing. President Biden got to do his thing.
The same thing goes now.
And none of it lasts forever.
However, our friends and family can last, if we choose to see them as more important than accusations and politics.
Hopefully Phil is wrong. I think he is.
I’ll give it only six weeks, like Winter…
Stupid rat.
I love your optimistic take on our political situation. I'll be 78 in four months, and I hope to vote in the next two elections. I hope there is still an election in 2028. I hate be so pessimistic, but I feel the negative effects of the current administration will be with us long after the the two elections. Just take an honest look at the judicial system. Think about the decisions of the current Supreme Court. Citizens United, Civil Rights, Social Security, Constitution Admindments are historical, and they are still with us. I'm lecturing. Sorry. Must be the teacher and coach coming back. I really enjoy your writing. We could have had some great discussions on Jocassee when I lived in Walhalla. This world needs more Ed Leaps. Thank you.
Few note nor long remember - that 02/02 is the middle of winter, so sorry Phil, an icon you are, a predictor you are not. Now back to the reds and blues....
