Safety in Warming Centers

Be kind and be careful

It is wonderful that churches and other groups are doing warming centers to help the homeless in these very cold times. I would just caution those working in such centers that by some estimates 80% of homeless individuals are either mentally ill (often with a psychotic disorder like schizophrenia), or are addicted to drugs or alcohol. This in no way means they aren’t deserving of love and care. However, from my decades of experience I can say that this can make them unpredictable, sometimes aggressive and potentially violent. So if you are engaged in such a ministry, please take appropriate precautions. I would not leave women alone to supervise men (or vice-versa). A strong physical presence would be helpful. Yes I mean male. And keep the phone close by to call police for help. Thanks!
