I was involved in the early days of medical blogging and was once invited to a meeting of some of the very first medical bloggers, held in New York City. Some of them became quite well known.
It was hosted by the owner of an influential, and profitable, website. The meeting took place shortly after the election of President Obama.
Our host made an interesting comment as we sat around room. While I paraphrase, it went something like this: “Since the election, my friends and I are now free, like the things that live under rocks and can now slither out in the light of day.” He actually mentioned things that live under rocks…
It was a peculiar and slightly creepy statement. But hey, his company was picking up the tab and it was a fascinating chance to meet other writers/bloggers.
The Obama era saw the beginning of many changes in American culture and politics. Those folks that emerged from “under the rocks” had apparently been afraid to say what they believed or intended. And they felt a new freedom.
Then followed a long, steady descent into the suppression of ideas and speech.
