I recently retired after 39 years in nursing. The last 13 years were in the “transfer center” aka “Bed Placement”…and post COViD, things just went downhill. I was weary of the hourly battle for beds, calls from offices wanting to direct admit patients and circumvent the emergency room, and being told by admins that we were to direct those patients to the er. I certainly don’t have any answers, and it frustrated me no end. Hated being in the position of trying to determine who to prioritize. Not fair to folks who have waited hours in the er for a bed for other patients to get directly admitted. And don’t get me started on the folks who refuse to stay home when they are sick and insist “it’s just allergies” and then expose other people who are vulnerable…
