My husband worked as a BioMed tech for nearly 50 years, but he also was a volunteer EMT for many years. (He was told by our legal department at our hospital he had to pick one or the other because they considered his skills a liability--guess you're not supposed to know how to fix the equipment and know its proper application, and they were concerned about him becoming an "expert witness" in such matters...)

And having worked in critical care many years myself and then in a transfer call center, I know all too well what our emergency medical teams face both in the field and in the ER.

Here in our state our legislators just voted in a change where only ONE person on an ambulance needs to be a certified EMT; the second person only needs to know CPR and how to drive. For our more isolated counties where getting to a tertiary facility could well be several hours, this is concerning...

These folks really are heroes. They deserve better wages and treatment by our hospitals and all the respect and support we can give them.

Best job description I've read. I was one of those medics that made the transition into nursing. And while I don't regret the move and as much as I grew to hate EMS for many of the reasons doc wrote. Close to 40 years and I still keep my medic card and pull and occasional shift on a local county squad.

For someone that constantly needed some kind of medical treatment, I can say that this is the major support for the society.
