I say Flex off the nonessential workers! The ones who don’t work in the front lines! The ones who don’t work in patient care! The ones that walk around making many more dollars than the essentials do!

Thank you all for the comments! I've certainly wondered about the things you said, Debbie and Karen. We don't tend to see the same hit taken by salaried admin. Now, I'm not in that world and maybe they do take cuts, but I doubt they're flexed off on slow days. And it's so true that you cannot predict emergencies. Seems pretty darn self evident. People don't plan their emergencies. Well, maybe when they go rattlesnake hunting or drunken jet-ski riding. But it's better to be overstaffed than under.

It's very disheartening, especially in areas such as the ER, to flex off staff not knowing when the next influx of pts are gonna hit the door. Or a terrible accident. I've been called to come in in the wee hours of the morning because of unexpected EMERGENCIES. It's not safe and it's not a smart move. Want to save big $$? Ask each upper leadership person to forego their salary for one day a month.
