Truly. My daughters both have become social workers in foster care, which is another whole ball game. (They wanted nothing to do with bodily fluids, so nursing was not an option for them, lol). But I have worked with many social workers through the years I worked as an RN at a hospital, and they usually do not receive enough credit for the work they do.
During the period when I was a Hospice chaplain, my niece's husband, age 42, died on Christmas Day of a heart anomaly, leaving two small children. I called the social worker from my office who knew just what to do in terms of supporting the children. She was such a blessing.
I am glad you wrote this, because the work of the social workers is often underappreciated, including by we physicians. Another person who deserves a lot of credit is the hospital chaplain! I once had a priest stay up all night in the E.D, praying a death vigil with a patient (and his family), who was dying from an inoperative ruptured aortic aneurysm.
