My grandmother used (1960s, very small midwestern town, Population <400)to make a poultice out of raw egg yolk and salt. She’d smear that on the injury, wrap gauze around it, then a few strips of tape to hold the gauze in place. She said the salt would stop the infections and the protein from the egg yolk helped the skin to heal.

One of the better doctors I had was the late Joseph Baldwin MD of Danvers, MA. After a long day of seeing patients, he would often exclaim, "We need more grandmas." His reasoning was pretty much the same as yours.

A seasoned ER nurse I worked with used to say that we needed a 1-800 call grandma hotline! I, too, saw multiple parents bring their children in when they “felt warm”, no actual temperature taken, only to find out they just woke up from a nap where they were bundled up as if going on a journey to the arctic! Or if a temperature was taken, no acetaminophen or ibuprofen was given because they wanted us to see that they had a fever. So we gave them an expensive dose of medication and some fluid to drink and sent them home
