Administrator….see the forest through the trees

We value our nurses but we do not show it ----their jobs are critical but yet we do not stop and think that not only are the nurses many times mistreated by patients and their families (which is understandable since our nurses have to answer the questions they may have regarding their loved ones since they are the ones that have the most communcation with the patient and their loved ones. (just an observation from someone not in the medical field but has needed to have their questions answered but the Doctors are not with the patient (in most cases) nearly the time our Nurses are with the patient and their family.

You’ve nailed it, Ed.

Has the exponential increase in administrative/supervisory positions (and costs) within and “overseeing” hospital-based nurses helped patient care or job safety/satisfaction/longevity?

Nurses are the frontline of patient care.

They’re being micro-managed and continuously squeezed while, as you noted, their assigned responsibilities escalate.

Emergency/bedside/hospital Nursing (and I’d also add EMS) are at a crisis point. Dedication alone will not only allow people to remain in a lousy situation forever.

Any thoughts on what changes will or should be coming?

I have worked in our local Emergency Department as an RN for 30 years. I have more mental trauma and PTSD symptoms from Emergency Nursing than when I was an Airborne Infantryman and sniper. I am tired but put on my uniform and go back to the ER day after day, weekend after weekend, holiday after holiday. (Yes, it is usually only 36 to 48 hours a week, but those days off seem to pass in a blur. I'm surprised my wife still loves me.)
